Igloolik 1954

In the summer of 1954 Jørgen Meldgaard, the French-Canadian Father Guy Mary-Roussilliére and the Canadian anthropologist Richard Emerick excavations at several settlements in Arctic Canada. Emerick filmed the men from Igloolik while sealing, hunting for whalrus and polarbear and made a documentary of their advanced methods of butchering and parting the animals and how the meat was shared after certain patters among the people at the settlement. The recordings were cut into the movie "The Eskimo", which has been distributed by Human Studies Film Archives, University of Pennsylvania Museum. Selected parts of the film can be seen here.
