The Research Initiatives at the Danish National Museum

Northern Worlds – the background

The collection of the Danish National Museum provides a very special opportunity for the study of man, society and culture in the Arctic and Northern temperate zones. All the departments of the National Museum – archaeology, ethnography, history, preservation and natural science – will be represented in the scientific initative creating synergy for a period of several years.

Three themes will underlay the structure of Northern Worlds

·         Climate Change and Society: Climate borderlines on the move

·         Farming on the Edge: Cultural Landscapes of the North

·         Network of the North: Communication, Exchange and Cultural Markers

The Northern Worlds opens new possibilities for the understanding of man and society in a world of continuous change and of man’s choice of strategies.
